Destination Door County Announces Free County-Wide Accessibility Assessment
June 2, 2025 – Door County. Destination Door County (DDC) is excited to announce a county-wide accessibility assessment as part of their commitment to creating a more inclusive and visitor-friendly destination.
The Accessibility Assessment will be conducted by Wheel the World, a leading platform for accessible travel. Benefits to participating locations include being listed on the Wheel the World platform, having access to the Wheel World Academy for leaders and staff, and receiving an Accessibility Verified Seal to display on-site.
Up to seventy Door County businesses, nonprofits and government entities are eligible to apply for a free accessibility assessment. The selection process will prioritize geographic balance to ensure accessibility improvements are realized across all regions of Door County. Each participating site will receive a private evaluation with customized suggestions for improvement.
"As we work together to build a more inclusive and welcoming destination, we want to highlight that investing in accessibility isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s a smart move that benefits both our visitor economy and our residents,” said Julie Gilbert, President & CEO of DDC. “These efforts can help drive occupancy and year-round visitation while also improving daily life for those who live and work in Door County."
Data from Wheel the World highlights the importance of community accessibility efforts: Worldwide, 30% of the world's population is directly affected by disability, people with accessibility needs spend 120 billion a year on travel, and 15 million Americans with disabilities travel at least once every year.
For those interested in learning more about the process, DDC and Wheel of the World are hosting a free informational webinar on Tuesday, June 17th at 10 am. Details about attending the webinar, more information about the program, and a link to the online application can be found at DoorCounty.com/accessibility.
